Carolina, the younger daughter of the wealthy merchant, Geronimo, secretly marries her father’s secretary, Paolino. The father suggests Count Robinson as an appropriate groom for the older sister, Elisetta but he, however, he falls in love with (the already married) Carolina and chaos ensues. Since its world premiere in 1792 at Vienna’s Burgtheater, il matrimonio segreto is the only Opera Buffa of the 18th Century that, along with Mozart’s masterpieces is still played today.
