Land of Smiles

Hardly any other role is so closely associated with the Linz world star Richard Tauber as that of Prince Sou-Chong from Franz Lehár's The Land of Smiles. On the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday the Landestheater is showing a new production of this most successful Lehár-Tauber operetta. Director Andreas Beuermann makes a Viennese museum the venue for his interpretation in the year of its premiere and links the genesis and the work with each other by placing the singer star Richard Tauber as the interpreter of Prince Sou-Chong at the centre of Lisa's passion for love.

Anlässlich des 150. Geburtstags Franz Lehárs zeigt das Landestheater eine Neuproduktion dieser erfolgreichsten Lehár-Tauber-Operette, die von der komplexen Liebesbeziehung des chinesischen Prinzen Sou-Chong zu der jungen Wienerin Lisa erzählt. Als Sou-Chongs politische Karriere seine Rückkehr in die Heimat erfordert, entschließt sich Lisa, ihm zu folgen. Doch das strenge Zeremoniell am chinesischen Hof, das Gebot, seine Gefühle nicht zu zeigen und „immer nur (zu) lächeln“ bleiben der jungen Wienerin schmerzhaft fremd. Als Sou-Chong auch noch vier Mandschu-Mädchen heiraten soll, kehrt Lisa enttäuscht mit Jugendfreund Gustl nach Wien zurück.
