Information
The career of the Jewish composer Erich Zeisl, born in Vienna in 1905, came to an abrupt end when Austria was annexed by the Nazis. He went into exile in America where in 1952 he premiered his Comedy with Music after Büchner's Leonce and Lena. Zeisl had already finished it before going into exile. He found a playful and meaningful tone for Büchner's comedy that is not only brilliantly sparkling, but also emotionally sensitive. He mixes the late-Romantic with a grotesquely sharpened expressionist idiom of sound.
