Information
The musical The Light in the Piazza begins like a fairy tale in the summer of 1953. In the magical atmosphere of Florence, the American Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara immerse themselves in the charm of an Italian summer night. Clara, who is intelectually disabled after a riding accident, falls in love with the young Florentine Fabrizio. The romance leads to a tragic story - dark secrets of the family are revealed.
For his passionate and sensitive music, composer Adam Guettel, grandson of the famous Richard Rodgers, received two Tony Awards (music and orchestration), author Craig Lucas wrote, among other things, the book of the musical An American in Paris, which was acclaimed in Linz. The world premiere of The Light In The Piazza was staged at Lincoln Center New York in 2005 and ran for over 500 performances; the DVD recording of the production sold millions of copies. The American director and choreographer Melissa King is best known in Linz for her production of Singin' in the Rain and her choreography of Wie im Himmel.
