Musical by Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and Terrence McNally

The story takes place in New York, at the beginning of the 20th Century: A black ragtime-pianist is striving for social acceptance, a Jewish immigrant becomes a celebrated movie maker, a woman from the white upper class evolves into a civil rights activist. Based on the novel by E. L. Doctorow, the syncopated, or ‘ragged,’ rhythm is the perfect soundtrack to bring those turbulent times to life in a compelling musical.

Opera in one-act by Othmar Schoeck

The Amazonian queen, Penthesilea, and her adversary, the Greek warrior Achilles fall in love. However, this breach of taboo costs them both their lives. In 1808 this Greek mythological tale inspired Heinrich von Kleist to write one of the most powerfully eloquent German dramas. Othmar Schoeck composed a forceful, late romantic influenced score for this work in 1927. In 2017, Peter Konwitschny, one of the leading contemporary directors, staged Schoeck’s opera at the Bonn Opera. In 2019 this production can be seen again in Linz.

Operetta by Carl Zeller

What is a Tyrolean bird seller doing in the Palatinate region? Carl Zeller has provided the answer in a theatrically effective manner since 1891. This was the year when his operetta classic premiered, with its chock-a-block full of catchy musical numbers such as “Ich bin die Christel von der Post“ (I’m Christel from the Post), “Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol” (Do you give roses in Tyrol?), or “Wie mein Ahnl zwanzig Jahr” (When my ‘Ahnl” was twenty). Once again this year the operetta specialist, Karl Absenger, who recently directed the productions of The White Horse Inn and A Night in Venice, will be the director of this staging.

In his bestseller, Edmund de Waal told the story of his family, a mighty clan of Jewish businessmen and the saga of a family heirloom: a collection of Netsuke – Japanese wood carvings – that survived world wars and Jewish pogroms.
