Musical by Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and Terrence McNally

The story takes place in New York, at the beginning of the 20th Century: A black ragtime-pianist is striving for social acceptance, a Jewish immigrant becomes a celebrated movie maker, a woman from the white upper class evolves into a civil rights activist. Based on the novel by E. L. Doctorow, the syncopated, or ‘ragged,’ rhythm is the perfect soundtrack to bring those turbulent times to life in a compelling musical.
Premiere | 8 February - 29 June 2019 | Großer Saal Musiktheater

Tragedy in one-act by Richard Strauss

Greek mythology, early psychoanalysis, and late Romantic-Opera are intertwined. After Salome and The Woman without a Shadow, the Landestheater Linz continues its Richard Strauss cycle with the 1-act tragic opera, Elektra. It’s a compelling, dramatic reflection; presenting a nervous, complex psychological profile of the palace court in Mycenae and Elektra’s great revenge. Revel in the experience of seeing the principal conductor, Markus Poschner at the console of a huge orchestral apparatus!

Operetta by Carl Zeller

What is a Tyrolean bird seller doing in the Palatinate region? Carl Zeller has provided the answer in a theatrically effective manner since 1891. This was the year when his operetta classic premiered, with its chock-a-block full of catchy musical numbers such as “Ich bin die Christel von der Post“ (I’m Christel from the Post), “Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol” (Do you give roses in Tyrol?), or “Wie mein Ahnl zwanzig Jahr” (When my ‘Ahnl” was twenty). Once again this year the operetta specialist, Karl Absenger, who recently directed the productions of The White Horse Inn and A Night in Venice, will be the director of this staging.

Musical by George and Ira Gershwin and Craig Lucas

An American WWII veteran, Jerry Mulligan, is trying to establish himself as a painter in post-war Paris and falls in love with the perfume sales girl and dancer, Lise. However his friends, Henri and Adam are enamored with Lise as well.  After its sensational success in Paris, London, and New York, The Landestheater Linz was able to secure the German language rights for the premiere of this stage adaptation of Gershwin’s dance musical, An American in Paris.

Musical drama (opera seria) in two acts by Wolfgang Amadé Mozart & Manfred Trojahn

In the last year of his life, Mozart composed this opera seria (serious style) based on the life of the Roman Emperor Titus. It’s a compelling story of power, love and the courage for compassion. However, Mozart left the scoring of the recitative to a pupil of his. This oddity inspired the renowned contemporary composer, Manfred Trojahn, to compose a new score for the recitative. In this innovative version, the opera evolves into an enthralling dialogue between classical and modern music.

Choreographed theater by Johann Kresnik based on William Shakespeare | Music by Kurt Schwertsik

This production by the “enfant terrible” of provocative dance theater has, in the meantime, become a classic. Johann Kresnik created a furor when it was first staged in 1988.  Gaudy, while at the same time highly aesthetic is the best way to describe the work of the Austrian provocateur of the dance world with his take on adverse social and political trends. Kresnik’s Macbeth originated during the zenith of the Barschel-Pfeiffer affair in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1987 and poignantly illustrates the sanguinary battle for power.
