Choreographed theater by Johann Kresnik based on William Shakespeare | Music by Kurt Schwertsik

This production by the “enfant terrible” of provocative dance theater has, in the meantime, become a classic. Johann Kresnik created a furor when it was first staged in 1988.  Gaudy, while at the same time highly aesthetic is the best way to describe the work of the Austrian provocateur of the dance world with his take on adverse social and political trends. Kresnik’s Macbeth originated during the zenith of the Barschel-Pfeiffer affair in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1987 and poignantly illustrates the sanguinary battle for power.

Musical by David Bowie and Enda Walsh

The extraterrestrial Newton has come to Earth to acquire water for his home planet. Years later he’s still stuck in a strange world desperately trying to numb his feelings of depression. Only when he encounters a young woman, also in great despair, are his hopes rejuvenated. Lazarus was premiered in New York in 2015 shortly before Bowie’s death. The musical is chock-a-block full of classic Bowie songs such as “Absolute Beginners,” “Heroes” and “This is not America.”

Story in three acts by Richard Wagner - Original production of the Bayreuth Festival 1993

Tristan und Isolde is a great love story that goes far beyond the borders of a rationale and therefore has no chance of surviving in the real world. In 1993 the German dramatist and director, Heiner Müller staged this work at the Bayreuth Festival and created a love and death roundelay of antique clarity. A co-production with the Opéra de Lyon, Müllers assistant director for the original production and current acting director in Linz, Stephan Suschke, resurrects this festival production on the stage of the Musiktheater under the musical direction of Markus Poschner with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz.
