Opera by Wolfgang Amadé Mozart

Guglielmo and Ferrando are two smug officers who are convinced that their wives will be eternally faithful to them. However, skeptic Don Alfonso asserts that there is no such thing as a faithful woman and proposes a portentous wager. The bet entails testing the two wives’, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, fidelity. Mozart’s musical test of loyalty in cooperation with librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, is his most pronounced operatic excursion into fickleness of love and morals with the title of the piece Così fan tutte––Women are like that––cleverly reflecting on the subject matter. However, does this apply only to women?

Opera by Benjamin Britten

Thomas Mann’s 1911 novel, Death in Venice, is without a doubt one of the highlights in German literature. It’s the compelling story of the aging author Gustav Aschenbach, who, in cholera–infested Venice, encounters the beautiful young boy, Tadzio and falls in love with him. The fateful story so fascinated the British composer, Benjamin Britten that it served as the inspiration for his last opera, Death in Venice. It is one of his densest and dramaturgically most innovative works.

Lyric scenes by Peter I. Tschaikowsky

In 1833 Alexander Pushkin published his universally acclaimed verse novel, Eugene Onegin, and thereby ushered in the era of the great, realistic, poetic novel. In 1879 Peter lljich Tchaikovsky composed an operatic rendition of Pushkin’s bored Russian dandy and intellectual, who confronts people and their feelings with sarcasm. The lush Russian romantic score, elegiac and spacious, is the perfect musical setting, allowing the characters to devote themselves entirely to their projections of love.

Dance piece by Mei Hong Lin | Music by Serge Weber

Every one of us is Romeo; every one of us is Julia. The universality of the love story between the two protagonists from Shakespeare’s iconic drama resonates in many of us. Mei Hong Lin takes the core idea of this tragic love story and illuminates the unbridled power of love that cannot be. It’s a love that unravels due to the constraints of rules and rivalries, forcing the two lovers to seek the only (and ultimate) solution to their travails by committing suicide.

The setting: a small Northern English town in 1947. A few local businessmen want to host a banquet in honor of the impending marriage of Princess Elisabeth and Prince Philip. Of course, this requires a large, good piece of meat for the occasion. But food is rationed at the time and meat hard to get. The idea is hatched to illegally mast a pig for the occasion: Betty, a pink dream of an animal. However the chiropodist, Gilbert Chilvers hears about the plan and on the prompting of his wife decides to steal Betty. More mayhem ensues, but who can slaughter a loveable pig with such doleful blue eyes.

Operetta by Johann Strauss

It’s not just any night in this costume comedy of mistaken identity by Johann Strauss, but a night during Venetian Carnival festivities. Virtually a 5th season, which was not only the main theater season but also filled the entire city with excessive goings-on and spectacles, turning it into a frenzied state. This festive setting gives Duke Guido of Urbino a clever idea: using the backdrop to approach the wife of Senator Bartolomeo Delaqua. The female protagonists however have their ideas what a successful carnival night entails and, with perplexing masquerading antics, attempt to take advantage of the situation as well.
