“What holds the world together at the core,” the premise for the Faust story is one of the great literary works of modern times. Twenty years after the first publication of Goethe’s Faust, Hector Berlioz discovered the first French translation of the universal tragedy. The story left a lasting impression and inspired the great French symphonic composer of the romantic era to compose La Damnation de Faust. This innovative work combines opera styles with those of a symphonic composition as well as that of an oratorio. By employing this unique combination Mephistopheles, Marguerite and the choir establish themselves as equal protagonists to Faust in this compelling performance.
